A TransAsia flight clipped a freeway overpass in Taiwan on Wednesday as it crashed into a river killing at least 23 people on board.
So far, 15 people have been rescued, including four children.
According to the Straits Times 14 people died at the scene while nine other died of injuries before they made it to the hospital.
Incredible video of the crash was captured by a motorist’s dashboard camera mere minutes after the flight took off from Songshan airport.
“The focus of our work is to try to use cranes to lift the front part of the wreckage, which is submerged under the water and is where most of the other passengers are feared trapped,” Taipei Fire Department official Wu Jun-hong told reporters.
“At the moment, things don’t look too optimistic,” he added. “Those in the front of the plane are likely to have lost their lives.”
Witness reports claimed to have seen people ejected from the plane upon impact, according to the Times.
In what is believed to be the final communication from the cockpit the plane’s crew shouted “Mayday! Mayday! Engine flameout!”
