Obama’s plan for ‘free’ college education collapses in a week; what really happened?’

When an idea’s too stupid for Nancy Pelosi and the mainstream media, it’s too stupid.

Exactly a week after he announced it with great fanfare on national television, aides to President Obama said Tuesday he’s dropping his top idea to fund “free” community college educations by taxing a popular tax-free college savings account used by middle class American families because it would be a “distraction” to the rest of his agenda.

“Disaster” to parents saving for their kids’ education is more like it.

Obama’s idea to end the so-called “529” plans – named after a section of the tax code – to pay for tuition credits ran into problems immediately, with House Speaker John Boehner and Minority Leader Pelosi finding a rare common ground in agreeing the White House had come up with a hair-brained idea.

That kind of opposition led a White House official– who sounds a lot like spokesman Josh Earnest pretending he’s not Josh Earnest to avoid humiliating himself – to tell the The New York Times:

“Given it has become such a distraction, we’re not going to ask Congress to pass the 529 provision so that they can instead focus on delivering a larger package of education tax relief that has bipartisan support, as well as the president’s broader package of tax relief for child care and working families.”

And blah, and blah, and blah.

So what happenedf?

The reality of it is, Democrats are basically the party of poor minorities and affluent whites. Poor minorities don’t have much of a stake in 529 college-saving plans, but affluent whites do, including affluent whites who work for network television and other media (like the guy who posted that question on Twitter, for instance).

As a Politico writer put it, any hope that the idea might slip by unnoticed was “very unlikely with many in the media residing in the exact income brackets that tend to use 529s.” (And that’s as damning a statement as can be made about an “objective” reporters who pretend they care about something other than their own  bank accounts and sham principles .)

If the nation’s reporters had been as affected by his plans to nationalize the American health care system we might be living in a different country today.

And Obama should know that as well as anyone. Way back in 2007, when the Oval Office was just a twinkle in the junior senator’s eye, he and Michelle used 529s to set aside money for their daughters’ college education. (Of course, his proposal didn’t include back-taxing 529s already set up, so the Obama girls’ education was assured.)

So the whole idea of how to pay for “free” college for everyone just bit the dust because it’s a “distraction,” an Obama flunky said. Could have used more distractions like that five years ago, when Pelosi was in a position of power that she used to shove Obamacare down America’s throat. The comparison wasn’t lost on everybody

Two more years.
