Sports jerk Bryant Gumbel’s got a BIG problem with the NRA, he just can’t say what it is

TV journalist and sportscaster Bryant Gumbel revealed in an interview published Tuesday that he harbors an intense hatred for the National Rifle Association. Without prompting from the interviewer, Gumbel condemned them as “pigs.”

After a 15-year career as co-host of NBC’s “The Today Show,” the newscaster eventually settled into hosting HBO’s “Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel.” It was a question posed by interviewer Jason Guerrasio about a segment that aired last year of that show that set off the outburst.

“A story you personally took on last season, about the ‘Eat What You Kill” movement, would you have done that five, 10 years ago?” Guerrasio asked for “Rolling Stone.”

Although the interviewer didn’t even mention the National Rifle Association, Gumbel launched into a tirade that came from way out in left field. He condemned the organization while offering neither argument nor reason.

There are a few things I hate more than the NRA. I mean truly. I think they’re pigs. I think they don’t care about human life. I think they are a curse upon the American landscape. So we got that on the record. That said, I’m willing to separate that this story had nothing to do with that. It’s not a gun story. So I would like to think that I would have done it, but I don’t know. Obviously, that was my first experience around killing and guns and hunting.

The “Eat what you kill” movement has gained popularity in recent years as a way to commune with nature, avoid artificial additives in commercial meats and avoid escalating food costs.

With the recent publication of Doug Giles’ work, “Rise, Kill and Eat: A Theology of Hunting from Genesis to Revelation,” the movement has even gained a religious connotation.

But it has little to do with the NRA.
