It must be nice to have a heartwarming story ready to go at a moment’s notice.
The president referred to Rebekah and Ben Erler’s story of hardship and recovery was presented as proof that the middle class is recovering thanks to Obama’s policies.
Unfortunately, while the White House mentioned that Rebekah Erler used to wait tables they failed to bring up the fact that Erler was also a Democrat campaign staffer for Washington Sen. Patty Murray.
In fact, Tuesday night’s State of the Union, when Erler was a guest of first lady Michelle Obama, it wasn’t even the first time the administration used Erler as a prop.
Reuters reported Erler’s ties to the Democrat party in June, when Obama spent a “day in the life” of Erler so he would have “an opportunity to communicate directly with the people he’s working for every day.”
At the time the Republican Party of Minnesota attacked the gesture.
“President Obama is so out of touch with reality that he thinks a former Democrat campaign staffer speaks for every Minnesotan,” Janet Beihoffer, MNGOP National Committeewoman, said.
Even more appalling, that meeting came at the same time the president was ignoring requests for a meeting from Jill Tahmooressi, the mother of U.S. Marine Sgt. Andrew Tahmooressi, who was being held in a Mexican prison at the time after accidentally crossing the border with guns that are illegal in Mexico.
(Andrew Tahmooressi was also a guest at Tuesday night’s speech, attending at the invitation of U.S. Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif.)
Despite that well-known background, Obama’s handlers obviously thought it was a good idea to trot Erler back out in front of the nation.
“America, Rebekah and Ben’s story is our story,” Obama said during his State of the Union address.
Yeah. It’s our story if we all worked for the Democrat Party.
