In the aftermath of the horrific attack on the satirical magazine Charlie Hedbo that resulted in the deaths of 12 people, French Prime Minister Manuel Valls declared Saturday that his country was at war with radical Islam.
A sensible conclusion following the worst terrorist attack in France in recent memory.
President Obama declared France is “our oldest ally” while denouncing the attacks, so surely his administration concurs.
On two separate occasions Sunday, outgoing Attorney General Eric Holder refused to say that the United States is at war with radical Islam.
Asked by both NBC’s Chuck Todd and ABC’s George Stephanopoulos, Holder fell back on what has been standard practice by the administration — defend Islam.
“Would you say that the United States is at war with radical Islam?” Todd asked Holder on “Meet the Press.”
“I would say that we are at war with terrorists who commit these heinous acts, and who use Islam — they use a corrupted version of Islam — to justify their actions,” Holder replied.
He responded in a similar manner when Stephanopoulos asked the very same question.
“Well, I certainly think that we are at war with those who would commit terrorist attacks and who would corrupt the Islamic faith in the way that they do, to try to justify their terrorist actions,” he said. “So that’s who we are at war with.”
Holder’s comments are consistent with remarks from White House press secretary Josh Earnest, who said the day after the terrorist attack in Paris that the U.S. needs to “redouble” efforts to explain “what the tenets of Islam actually are.”
