Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper left little doubt about how he viewed the recent Paris terrorist attack, saying “the international jihadist movement has declared war.”
While President Obama’s message about terrorist activity is often watered-down, Harper reminded Canadians that they run risk of falling victim to a similar hate-fueled attack.
“They have declared war on anybody who does not think and act exactly as they wish would think and act,” Harper said Thursday at a press conference in the Vancouver suburb of Delta, according to The Blaze. “They have declared war on any country, like ourselves, that values freedom, openness and tolerance.”
Attacks by Islamic terrorists are not going to fade, Harper said.
“We may not like this and wish it would go away, but it is not going to go away,” the prime minister said, reminding Canadians that Islamic radicals attacked the country twice in October. “This is going to be, unfortunately, the reality of the world that I think we’re living in for some time to come. And we’re just going to have to face that head on and deal with it.”
Shortly after Islamic terrorists killed 10 journalists and two responding police officers at the Charlie Hebdo satirical newspaper offices, White House spokesman Josh Earnest seemed to take great pains not to label the shootings as the work of Islamic extremists.
“Islam is a religion of peace,” Earnest said.
In a written statement posted on WhiteHouse.gov, President Obama made no mention of jihadists or Islamic extremists, saying:
I strongly condemn the horrific shooting at the offices of Charlie Hebdo magazine in Paris that has reportedly killed 12 people. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims of this terrorist attack and the people of France at this difficult time. France is America’s oldest ally, and has stood shoulder to shoulder with the United States in the fight against terrorists who threaten our shared security and the world. Time and again, the French people have stood up for the universal values that generations of our people have defended. France, and the great city of Paris where this outrageous attack took place, offer the world a timeless example that will endure well beyond the hateful vision of these killers. We are in touch with French officials and I have directed my Administration to provide any assistance needed to help bring these terrorists to justice.
