Britain’s MI5 warns Al Qaeda is planning mass attacks on the western world

While the world focuses on the terror attacks in France more attacks could be coming.

Britain’s MI5 is warning that Al Qaeda is planning mass attacks on the western world.

Director General Andrew Parker warned that an attack on the UK and the west’s “iconic targets” and transportation systems was “highly likely.”

“A group of core al Qaeda terrorists in Syria is planning mass casualty attacks against the West,” he said at MI5 headquarters in London.

“My sharpest concern as director-general of MI5 is the growing gap between the increasingly challenging threat and the decreasing availability of capabilities to address it,” he added.

According to the BBC Parker claimed that MI5 thwarted three terror attack plots in recent months.

“Deaths would certainly have resulted otherwise,” Parker said.

Still serious future threats are a major concern.

“We cannot be complacent,” he said. “Although we and our partners try our utmost we know that we cannot hope to stop everything.”

Because of the potential of “lone-wolf” attacks the job of organizations like MI5 and the CIA is increasingly more difficult.

“The going is getting tougher but there are good reasons for confidence in our enduring ability to respond,” Parker said. “Its well-understood that we can’t guarantee to stop everything, but we continue to strive to get as near to that as we can.”

The scary part is the ones they miss.
