Former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke crossed swords with Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly on Monday, denying he is a white supremacist and comparing – again – the media’s treatment of him versus its absurd veneration for the late Sen. Robert Byrd.
Duke, of course, is a 1990s leftover who’s back in the news after a Democrat-planted story exploded in the media last week about incoming House Majority Whip Steve Scalise and his apparent speech 12 years ago to a group affiliated with Duke.
The actual facts around Scalise’s speech are still murky, but Duke wanted to make one thing clear to O’Reilly.
“I was never a white supremacist,” he said. “I was out of the Klan at this time [2002] longer than Bob Byrd was out of the Klan when he went to Congress … He was in it years after I was.”
O’Reilly, presumably no fan of Byrd’s legendary liberalism in the Senate, pointed out that the senator had repudiated his past. Duke, O’Reilly said, had never done so.
O’Reilly was uncharacteristically taking a Democrat at face value here.
Byrd’s alleged repudiation of his racist past is the kind of story liberals love to tell each other. An objective look at the timing of his switch from a segregationist who opposed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to a liberal Democrat who voted for the Civil Rights Act of 1968 shows it’s just as possible Byrd was simply an opportunist in the 1940s, ‘50s and early 1960s.
Stoking racial fears was the Democrat Party’s strategy back then — as it is now.
When the party lurched left in the ‘60s, and it paid politically to be more liberal, Byrd just switched sides.
In other words, Byrd was a rabid racist when it benefited him to be and a civil rights supporter — when it benefited him to be.
Duke, on the other hand, told O’Reilly (however implausibly) that there was no reason for him to repudiate anything.
“I’m looking out for the rights of all American citizens,” he said.
