Florida police officer fatally shot was NYPD veteran

Florida law enforcement veteran Charles “Charlie K” Kondek, 45, was fatally shot early Sunday morning in the line of duty, according to BayNews9.

Officer Kondek’s name was displayed on the Tarpon Springs Police Department Facebook page around 11:15 a.m. The heart felt message had been shared close to 1.5K times at the time of this post.

Kondek, a father of five, was a 17-year veteran of the police department, primarily working the midnight shift. He spent five years as an officer with the New York City Police Department before moving to Florida.

The investigation is still ongoing as they are working a second scene where the suspect fled and crashed in a white Hyundai sedan, the Baynews9 reported.

The suspect fled to Athens Street, where he crashed into a power pole and then a pickup truck, authorities said.

No other information has been released. Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri and Tarpon Springs Police Chief Robert Kochen are expected to provide more details at a news conference this afternoon.
