Grief affects people in different ways, so we should always very sensitive when we see the relatives of victims being interviewed on television.
This young man’s brother was shot shortly before the segment was recorded. We must assume the best: that Ceser Smith once knew how to speak and now, racked with grief over his brother’s shooting, he’s lost the ability to communicate his thoughts to other people.
It would be crass to think (and so we don’t) that what we’re seeing here is freestyle rapping, a sad attempt to show off on television and take advantage of the brief spotlight provided by the media because of his brother being shot. That would be awful to even suspect.
Our hearts go out to the victims of shootings and to their families. And to all who cannot communicate with others, for whatever reason.
