Barack Obama tried to score points with his black base in an interview with Black Entertainment Television broadcast Monday, but all he did was rile up the more radical end of its spectrum.
And be told things haven’t changed in this country in the past 50 years after all.
At the tail end of a screaming match with Fox News’ host Sean Hannity Monday night, liberal pundit and PBS talk show host Tavis Smiley delivered a message of anger for Obama’s interview. (The relevant part starts about 10 minutes in.)
The president, he said, had no business talking to a black audience about black progress in the country – even if he couched it in a message for contempt for America’s cops.
“With all due respect to our president, Barack Obama, black folks don’t need lectures on Black Entertainment Television,” Smiley said, addressing the president.
Smiley, who seems far too intelligent to be as ignorant as he pretends to be, contended racial progress in the United States has been oversold – and accused Obama of being one of the over-salesmen.
“When you say we can’t compare what’s happening now to what happened 50 years ago, tell that to the parents of these kids who are being gunned down in the street.
“It is, in many ways, as bad as it was 50 years ago.”
That’s nonsense, of course. Fifty years ago, the idea of a black man – a black host of a PBS television show – addressing his comments to another black man – a black United States president – would have been inconceivable.
And those kids being gunned down in the street Smiley’s so hypocritically concerned about are being gunned down at an astounding rate by their own community – not white police officers.
In one respect, though, he has a might have a point about things not improving. Fifty years ago, Smiley was three months old – so he wasn’t even talking yet.
