President Obama has flown off the handle at least twice on his media acolytes, launching into off-the-record tirades over negative news coverage, a retired ABC News journalist told C-SPAN.
What, his pants weren’t ironed crisply enough?
Laughable as it is, former ABC White House correspondent Ann Compton told an interviewer in October that she had once been among a group of reporters when a profanity-spewing Obama berated them for coverage of “scandals he didn’t think were scandals.”
(What “phony scandals” could that have been about? Compton doesn’t give a time frame, so it’s tough to guess.)
Another time, she said, Obama was angry because reporters apparently didn’t understand the limits of an American president when dealing with the Middle East.
“And I don’t find him apologetic,” Compton said. “But I find him willing to stand up to the press and look them in the eye, even though it was off the record and just give us hell.”
She sounds almost admiring. Like it’s a feat of courage for an American president to go “off the record” with reporters in a blatant attempt at intimidation.
And what’s worse — for anyone who follows news coverage of the most coddled president since JFK — it must have worked.
Listen to Compton’s answer to the interviewer when he asked if Obama had a point.
“From his point of view, he may,” she said. “But we cover what we are allowed to cover. And when policy decisions and presidents are inaccessible and don’t take questions from the press on a regular basis, I think they get — they reap what they sow.”
Tough talk that, “they reap what they sow.” But the real point is how she started: “We cover what we are allowed to cover.”
