The blood was fake this time.
Three American sailors reportedly from the USS Ross who were making a visit to one of Turkey’s biggest tourist neighborhoods while on a port call in Istanbul were attacked Wednesday morning by a mob of men chanting, “Yankee, go home” and attempting to put sacks over the heads, Turkish media reported.
According to a Dogan News Agency, the attackers in the Eminönü district of Instanbul were members of a nationalistic group called the Turkish Youth Union. They threw sacks of red dye at the sailors – symbolizing blood, apparently – and accused the sailors of being murderers, simply because of their nationality.
“You declared that you are a member of the U.S. army. We define you as murderers. We want you to leave our land,” a man shouts in labored English before the attack begins.
In a statement, the U.S. Embassy in Ankara called the attack “appalling.”
“The video showing an assault on three visiting American sailors is appalling. While we respect the right to peaceful protest and freedom of expression, we condemn today’s attack in Istanbul, and have no doubt the vast majority of Turks would join us in rejecting an action that so disrespects Turkey’s reputation for hospitality,” the statement said.
According to the news agency, the attack was inspired by a 2003 confrontation between U.S. forces and Turkish soldiers in northern Iraq, in which Turkish soldiers suspected of being part of a planned attack on an Iraqi-Kurdish governor were taken prisoner by Americans. It became known as “the hood incident” in Turkey and has been a source of national anger since.
So that’s what this was about? Maybe, maybe not.
A couple things are clear even from a cursory look though. No one just happens to go to a tourist neighborhood armed with sacks of red dye. No one just happens to practice English sentences like “We define you as murders” and “we are using our right to protest you” (if this guy is fluent in English, Joe Biden is a genius).
And no one just happens to be in a mob with sacks they can conveniently throw over any American soldiers they happen to run across at the tourist market.
Think that camera just happened to be running?
These guys were about as angry at something that happened 11 years ago as the “mob” that attacked the American post in Benghazi in 2012 were angry about that video no one ever saw.
This time, the American blood was fake.
It wasn’t last time. Will it be next time?
