It looks like the President Obama has found a way to personally offend another nation, just by being himself.
The “low-rent” appearance of chomping on gum and refusing to use the limousine provided for him made him a target for criticism, according to USA Today.
The report pointed out the irony:
Ahead of an economic summit in Beijing, billed as the biggest international event in the Chinese capital since the 2008 Summer Olympic Games, authorities demanded that residents brush up their typically brusque manners. The Communist Party launched a six-month campaign to make Beijingers behave in a more civilized fashion to welcome the world.
To make a show of the event, China’s state-run television channel highlighted the leaders of the 21 Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation member states arriving to a banquet gala Monday night. They each pulled up in socialist-style limousines with red flags, along red-lit streets, according to USA Today.
Obama arrived in his own vehicle, refusing the government’s limo service ( understandably), but he stepped out of the car noticeably chomping on gum, Nicorette, presumably.
Chinese Internet users saw him as an impolite “idler,” or careless “rapper,” USA Today reported. Since China doesn’t allow social media, the Twitter-like venue had limited viewing, but comments didn’t skew in the president’s favor.
“We made this meeting so luxurious, with singing and dancing, but see Obama, stepping out of his car chewing gum like an idler,” wrote Yin Hong, a professor of journalism at Beijing’s Tsinghua University, according to USA Today.
On the upside, it wasn’t quite as classless as snapping selfies with blonde women at funerals as your wife gives you a death glare.
