Hospitals battle state over emergency care for undocumented immigrants – A coalition of Florida hospitals is challenging a state policy on emergency care for undocumented immigrants. The coalition, which includes Broward Health and Memorial Healthcare System in Hollywood, says the state Agency for Health Care Administration has been unlawfully limiting payments to hospitals that provide emergency services to undocumented immigrants. “There clearly is a federal intent that these hospitals be paid, and the state is supposed to follow it,” said Joanne B. Erde, a Miami attorney representing the hospitals. “It is a condition of participating in the Medicaid program.” The state Agency for Health Care Administration, or AHCA, says it is has followed the law. Giuliani with ScottGiuliani Joins Scott On Campaign Trail In Miami – A day after the Jacksonville debate versus Democrat Charlie Crist, Gov. Rick Scott was back on the campaign trail with a big name politician at his side. Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani joined the incumbent governor at a Miami eatery on Wednesday. As part of the “Get Out The Early Vote Bus Tour,” Scott visited Doral pizzeria Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza and then was joined by Giuliani at 2:15 p.m. at Miami pastry shop Ankarr European Pastry Shop. Florida Governor’s Race Still Deadlocked – Republicans Bondi, Putnam, Atwater Lead Down Ballot Races 46% Floridians Concerned About Contracting Ebola – From a press release: The Florida governor’s election between former Gov. Charlie Crist and incumbent Gov. Rick Scott is statistically tied, according to a new poll from the Saint Leo University Polling Institute. With less than two weeks before the election, Crist leads, 43-40 percent, with Libertarian candidate Adrian Wyllie pulling 8 percent, and 9 percent of likely voters saying they are undecided. Crist’s lead is within the poll’s margin of error, and the race can be described as a statistical tie. Read more

Report: Grayson now 17th richest congressman – Alan Grayson has done well lately, financially that is. According to CQ Roll Call “Wealth of Congress” rankings, the Democratic Congressman from Orlando became the 17th wealthiest member in the calendar year of 2013, with an estimated net worth of $26.2 million. He moved up from 21st in the previous report, when his net worth was estimated at $16.7 million. “Grayson’s net worth surged by almost $10 million as he actively bought and sold exchange traded funds — mutual funds that trade like stocks and allow investors to bet on short-term market movements,” Roll Call explained. … U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan, R-Sarasota, topped Florida’s delegation, coming in at 11th, with a net worth of $37.2 million. Read more

Bill Clinton to rally for Gwen Graham – Bill Clinton will appear at a rally for Gwen Graham on Oct. 26 in Tallahassee, adding star power to neck-and-neck race with incumbent Republican Rep. Steve Southerland. The event will be held at Florida A&M Quad and lands in the only Sunday of early voting — the “souls to the polls” day that could drive a critical African American vote. Admission is free and doors will open at noon, according to the campaign. Read more
