Reince Priebus was a gentleman even when he slipped the knife in to Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s considerable ego.

But it had to have hurt.

The Republican National Committee chairman appeared with the voluble South Florida representative on “Fox News Sunday” with Chris Wallace, and cut the legs out from under the newly coiffed Democratic National Committee chairwoman with one turn of a phrase.

“The one question voters are going to ask themselves is ‘who has my back,’” Wasserman Schultz blurted out, trying to pretend her party isn’t headed for disaster in a little more than two weeks.

Priebus struck.

“Debbie, you guys are losing everywhere, first of all, and the president hasn’t had anybody’s back,” he said. “He hasn’t even had your back.”

Priebus was referring to a humiliating report in Politico in September — one amplified by other media outlets – that relegated Wasserman Schultz to the role of rope-hanger groupie, a sad, embarrassing spectacle of a woman who pestered President Obama, wanted the party to pick up the tab for her outfits and abused the job by hitting up donors for contributions to her own campaign while she was supposed to be shilling for the national party.

The usually game Wasserman Schultz didn’t even try to answer the sally. She couldn’t have if she wanted to. She’d already been left out to dry.

(Though White House spokesman Josh Earnest said after the story appeared that Obama has confidence in Wasserman Schultz, the phrasing was less than resounding.

“I don’t anticipate any reason” for her not to stay on as DNC chairwoman, Earnest said.)

Priebus and Wasserman Schultz tangled for 10 minutes more on Sunday – on everything from Obama’s bungling of the Ebola crisis to Wasserman Schultz’s slanderously invoking wife-beating imagery while discussing the Republican governor of Wisconsin. But it was Preibus’s zing that stood out.
