Ben Carson wallops Hillary Clinton in fundraising; momentum growing for White House run

ben-hillaryIt’s safe to say things are looking up for retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson, and may get even better as reports say he’s about to announce a run for the White House.

In an impressive showing, Carson easily topped likely Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton in donations last quarter, bagging $3.3 million to her $2 million, according to the Washington Examiner.

Adding to his momentum, the independent Draft Ben Carson for President Committee announced on Tuesday it has surpassed $10 million in donations, the Examiner reported.

“The great success of the draft effort is a testament to our belief that it is Dr. Carson who is best equipped to heal our country,” said committee campaign director Vernon Robinson.

As for Carson running for president, it all but a given according to Bloomberg News, which did an in-depth feature on him this week. Bloomberg reported:

For Carson himself, months of exploring have started to shift into action. He launched his own political action committee to support his nascent campaign in August (called USA First PAC.) He has named his campaign chairman (Houston businessman Terry Giles.) He even knows the first thing he’d do if elected (call for a joint session of Congress, where he will pledge to bridge the divide that has split the two parties.)

Carson was cast into the national spotlight in February 2013 while speaking at the National Prayer Breakfast, where he took President Obama to task over a number of issues while the president sat a few feet away.

“Honestly, after the prayer breakfast things began to happen that I wasn’t anticipating,” Carson told Bloomberg. “Then the question became, can you just walk away and do what you want to do and just leave all of those people who were just clamoring and saying you’ve gotta do this.”

Of course, black Republicans don’t fare too well once they step on the national stage. Just ask Herman Cain. But if anyone is able to rise above the vitriol that marks politics today, Carson may be the one.

“A house divided against itself cannot stand and we’re a perfect example of that, and yet you see a war on everything,” he said in the Bloomberg profile. “On women. Income wars. Race wars. Religious wars. You name it, there’s a war on it and it’s destroying us.”

A message that just may find a receptive audience.
