Gowdy backs Secret Service director into a corner as only he can

South Carolina Republican Trey Gowdy turned his prosecutor’s instincts loose Tuesday as he ripped into the director of the Secret Service for her agency’s bungling of a 2011 attack on the White House.

And he took a backhanded slap at Democrats for trying to blame sequestration for the whole situation too.

ollagetreygowdyjuliapierson0930With Secret Service Director Julia Pierson appearing before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, Gowdy used his five minutes of questioning to hammer away at why it took White House housekeepers – rather than Secret Service agents — to find out the president’s home had been struck by at least seven bullets during the November 2011 incident.

And it wasn’t until four days after the shooting that the Secret Service actually knew it took place.

The chief focus of Tuesday’s hearing was the White House security breach that took place Sept. 19,   break-in that occurred.

At it opened, Pierson read a brief statement accepting responsibility for that incident and vowing to take measures to ensure it wouldn’t recur.

The story of the 2011 shooting was outlined in detail in a Washington Post article over the weekend, but Gowdy wanted to hear from Pierson herself how botched job occurred.

In questioning that repeatedly cited the extent of Secret Service agents’ training, Gowdy was openly incredulous that an agency charged with guarding the life of the president of the United States could have been so slipshod.

“Can you tell me why a housekeeper found the evidence and your agents did not?” Gowdy asked Pierson towards the end of his time with the microphone. “Why not search every inch of the White House? This is just processing a crime scene, this is not high math. Why wasn’t it done?”

“It was not as thorough as it needed to be,” Pierson answered.

As a career prosecutor and chairman of the House Select Committee on Benghazi, Gowdy has a reputation of being one of the sharpest interrogators in Congress.
