Couple pays it forward, story of big tip for terrible service goes viral

Iowa Facebook receiptAn Iowa couple who had horrible service at a restaurant on their anniversary decided that instead of complaining, “paying it forward” was the best thing they could do.

Makenzie Schultz wrote about the evening she and her husband experienced Saturday on her Facebook page.

It wasn’t good.

“Our service tonight sucked,” Schultz wrote. “Took 20 minutes to get water, 40 minutes for an appetizer and over an hour for our entree. People all around us were making fun of the restaurant and how bad the service was. Yeah, it was pretty terrible.”

The couple didn’t blame the server, who Schultz said appeared to be waiting on 12 tables and was “running around like crazy.”

As she watched the poor guy run around apologizing to everyone, she said to her husband, Steven, “Wow, this used to be us. Waiting tables. I don’t miss it at all and I never loved that job. I did it for the tips.”

The two agreed that it would make them feel good to make the waiter’s night with a big tip, as he probably wouldn’t be getting much that night with such slow service.

Schultz posted a copy of the receipt showing a $100 tip on a $66 tab. The post has gone viral, receiving more than one million “likes” and nearly 175,000 shares.

She said they left before the server saw the tip and she wasn’t looking for a pat on the back, but merely wanted it to be “a friendly reminder to think of the entire situation, before you judge.

“And always always always remember where you came from.”
