A police officer was shot late Saturday in Ferguson, Mo., while on routine patrol.

According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the officer spotted two suspects trying to break into a business and when he confronted the men, one of the suspects pulled a gun and shot the officer in the arm.

Police did return fire but there was no indication that either suspect was hit, local news reported. The officer is expected to survive — the suspects remain at large.

As word of the shooting filtered out, social media lit up. Early on it was reported that the officer was a woman, but that proved not to be true.

Rumors quickly spread that one of the suspects was killed, and in a show of just how chaotic things are in Ferguson, these false reports prompted angry protesters to gather and denounce the police.

For protecting themselves!

St. Louis alderman Antonio French, who regularly tweets from the scene of protests in Ferguson, posted several tweets on Saturday’s incident, including a video of Missouri State Highway Patrol Capt. Ron Johnson dispelling rumors that a suspect was shot:

Police held a news conference early Sunday near the Ferguson Police Department, with about 100 “skeptical” protesters on hand, according to the Post-Dispatch.

“We are going to shut this down,” the protesters chanted in the background.

As for rumors of a suspect being killed, this tweet was posted via the Twitter account “Global Revolution TV,” which was heavily involved in support of the Occupy Wall Street movement:

In a separate incident, an off-duty St. Louis City police officer was shot at a short time later, near the site of a protest earlier this month in support of 18-year-old Michael Brown, according to the local CBS affiliate KMOV.

The officer was in his own car driving along westbound I-70 around midnight when a passing vehicle began firing at him. He was not hit, but was injured by broken glass from the gunshots. It was unclear if he was targeted because he was a police officer, KMOV reported.
