Obama busted for ‘jayvee’ lie on ‘Meet the Press’; fact-checkers pile on ‘Pinocchios’

The fact-checkers who labeled one of President Obama’s biggest whoppers the “Lie of the Year” in 2013 is back – Obama a liar again after his interview broadcast Sunday on “Meet the Press.

Early in the sitdown with NBC’s Chuck Todd, Obama tried to clarify a Todd question about the Islamic  State by pretending one of his most famous quotes from a January interview with the New Yorker magazine had been misinterpreted for the past eight months.

obamameetthepress0908He never called the Islamic State “the jayvee squad,” he said.

“Keep in mind I wasn’t specifically referring to (Islamic State),” Obama told Todd, fingering a gradually growing nose.

“I’ve said that, regionally, there were a whole series of organizations that were focused primarily locally, weren’t focused on homeland, because I think a lot of us, when we think about terrorism, the model is Osama bin Laden and 9/11.”

The Tampa Bay Times fact-checking column PolitiFact found that not to be, in fact, true. Exactly the opposite, in fact.

“The statement is false,” the column found.

Anyone who follows the news and isn’t blinded by partisanship or Obama worship – in other words, conservatives – knew Obama was lying as soon as the words were out of his mouth (actually, as soon as the interview started).

And the fact is, the quote has been discussed, dissected and rehashed endlessly. The president chooses now to try to backpedal?

White House spokesman Josh Earnest tried the same approach at an Aug. 25 news briefing – the same convoluted logic — and got branded a “four-Pinocchio” liar by the Washington Post’s “Fact Checker” columnist Glenn Kessler.

Since Obama seems to learn everything he knows by what’s in the news, he should have known he was lying already.
