The U.S. government has released 169 illegal aliens with “homicide-related” convictions into communities around the country.
Officials with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement admitted they “released 36,007 criminal aliens” from custody in 2013, providing ZIP codes for the communities where 169 of the most violent offenders went, according to an Aug. 15 letter to U.S. Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa.
Grassley had requested the information in June.
“Ensuring that our enforcement policies and procedures are best suited to protect national security and public safety is paramount,” Thomas Winkowski, the agency’s principal deputy assistant secretary, wrote. “To make certain that we are doing everything we can in this regard, I am instituting new procedures requiring that an appropriate senior-level supervisor must approve before ICE releases potentially dangerous individuals.”
