Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid cracked a couple of jokes aimed at the Asian audience he was speaking to on Thursday that would make the PC police cringe.
“I don’t think you’re smarter than anybody else, but you’ve convinced a lot of us you are,” Reid told the Las Vegas Asian Chamber of Commerce crowd, according to TIME.com.
While some laughed, it didn’t sound like it went over well.
As if that weren’t enough, Reid ended on a similar note. At the conclusion of his remarks, he was introduced to another gentleman who joined him on stage.
“One problem that I’ve had today is keeping my Wongs straight,” he said.
Reid issued a statement to TIME after publication of the story apologizing for the remarks.
“My comments were in extremely poor taste and I apologize,” the statement said. “Sometimes I say the wrong thing.”
