Bears legend Mike Ditka on liberals’ Redskins name controversy: ‘So stupid it’s appalling’

Former Chicago Bears coach and NFL institution Mike Ditka has no time for PC garbage.

collagemikeditkaredskins0821In an interview with the team affiliated RedskinsHistorian.com and broadcast this week on Keith Olbermann’s ESPN2 show, “Olbermann,” made it clear that the faux controversy over the team’s allegedly insensitive name is being drummed up for political purposes.

“What’s all the stink over the Redskin name? It’s so much [expletive] it’s incredible,” Ditka, now an ESPN analyst. told RedskinHistorian’s Mike Richman.

“We’re going to let the liberals of the world run this world. It was said out of reverence, out of pride to the American Indian. Even though it was called a Redskin, what are you going to call them, a Brownskin? This is so stupid it’s appalling, and I hope that owner keeps fighting for it and never changes it, because the Redskins are part of an American football history, and it should never be anything but the Washington Redskins. That’s the way it is.”

With Olbermann being Olbermann – he’s still one of the “liberals of the world” Ditka despises – he added his own commentary to Ditka’s.

And with Olbermann still being Olbermann, what he added was smug, addle-headed and wrong. Comparing the Redskins being pressured to change their name with the individual decisions by boxer Cassius Clay and basketball great Lew Alcindor to change their own names back in the day – to Muhammed Ali and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar — was classically stupid.

But hearing his rattletrap is worth it to catch Ditka’s take.
