As President Obama jetted off for his annual summer retreat to posh Martha’s Vineyard, likely presidential contender U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz slammed him as “an absentee president.”
“I think the president should actually stand up and do his job as commander in chief, should spend less time on the golf course and more time doing the job to which he was elected,” the Texas Republican said, according to ABC News.
Not surprisingly, Obama was on a golf course when Cruz delivered his prescient assessment.
Speaking to reporters while visiting the Iowa State Fair, Cruz hit the president hard on foreign policy and the lack of a “strategic vision” in responding to the reign of terror that the extremist group Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant has brought on Iraq, ABC News reported.
Promising that “America is coming to help,” Obama authorized airstrikes on Thursday, but only “if necessary.” The approval came as thousands of religious minorities sit stranded on Mount Sinjar in northern Iraq, facing potential genocide at the hands of Islamist militants.
Cruz appeared to support the decision, but questioned Obama’s leadership, according to ABC News.
The media does little to spotlight just how often Obama golfs, but unofficial counts based on a website that tracks his outings show he has played 184 rounds during his six years in office — 81 rounds since his 2012 re-election alone.
He has also attended 75 political fundraisers since reclaiming the White House, according to the New York Post.
U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., another potential 2016 challenger for the White House, has also taken shots at Obama for his affection for the golf course.
“Our problem with President Obama isn’t that he’s a bad person,” Rubio said while endorsing 2012 Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, according to CNS News. “By all accounts, he, too, is a good husband and a good father and — thanks to lots of practice — a good golfer. Our problem is not that he’s a bad person. Our problem is that he’s a bad president.”
