Former NFL star on why he turned Republican: I realized Dems were devastating blacks

A retired NFL linebacker said he is running for Congress as a Republican because Democrats have failed the black community.

“African American communities throughout the country are doing horribly under Democratic-run cities, and that’s why I want to put an end to it,” Garry Cobb said Wednesday on Newsmax TV’s “Steve Malzberg Show.”

Cobb, a former Philadelphia Eagle with 11 years in the NFL, is running for Congress in New Jersey’s 1st District, which includes culturally mixed Camden, with a population of 48 percent black and 47 percent Latino residents, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. About 40 percent of the population is below poverty level, but Democrats enjoy a whopping 184.61 percent advantage over Republicans, according to Ballotpedia.

Cobb has an uphill battle against opponent Donald Norcross, brother of Democratic power broker George Norcross III. On Monday, according to philly.com, U.S. Sen. Harry Reid traveled to New Jersey to raise money for Norcross’ campaign.

“I didn’t realize it, but as I started thinking about it and growing up, because as a kid going to college, you know, I was all into the Democratic Party and everything,” Cobb said on the Malzberg show. “Then I started realizing they helped destroy our communities, and we’re supposed to be celebrating electing these people.”

Garry CobbCobb said he spent the past 20 years mentoring young people in Philadelphia and New Jersey, where he saw the result of welfare programs first established under Democratic President Lyndon B. Johnson.

“I saw my cousins get on the program [while growing up], but when they would come to the house, my dad would show them the door,” Cobb said. “He felt that a man belonged with his family, and in order to get on the program, the man had to leave the home.”

Many of Cobb’s cousins ended up in jail, while his immediate family members went to college and enjoyed successful careers, he said, calling welfare programs an “incentive for the man to leave the home.”

“It’s destroyed African American families throughout the country,” he said.
