An Islamic terrorist group’s aggressive expansion in weapons, recruits, cash and territory has prompted a reluctant President Obama to call in the Air Force, but only on a restricted basis.
An Islamic State spokesman announced the group’s plans to “humiliate” America and its allies and “raise the flag of Allah in the White House.”
“The Islamic Caliphate has been established,” the spokesman, Abu Mosa, says in the first of a highly graphic five-part video released Thursday by the international news organization, VICE News. “Don’t be cowards and attack us with drones. Instead, send your soldiers, the ones we humiliated in Iraq.”
Pledging not to put boots on the ground, Obama authorized a limited air-bomb campaign Thursday, to prevent the militant group Islamic State from capturing Irbil in northern Iraq, hoping to avoid the slaughter of tens of thousands of Yazidis trapped on mountaintops besieged by the blood-thirsty jihadists. On Friday, Navy F/A-18 Hornets attacked ISIS artillery depots and trucks.
“To stop the advance on Irbil, I’ve directed our military to take targeted strikes against ISIL [Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant] terrorist convoys should they move toward the city,” Obama said. “We intend to stay vigilant and take action if these terrorist forces threaten our personnel or facilities anywhere in Iraq, including our consulate in Irbil and our embassy in Baghdad.”
Retired U.S. military generals criticized Obama’s plan for giving the dangerous situation short shrift, saying Islamic State forces are easily identifiable and can be eradicated with a concentrated use of B-1 and B-52 bombers, Fox’s “Kelly File” reported.
Abu-Bakr al-Baghdadi, the shadowy head of Islamic State’s ultra-radical Sunnis, has used beheadings and mass murders to spread terror throughout the region, according to multiple news accounts. As his power grows and consolidates, so do threats to neighboring Lebanon, Jordan, Kurdistan, Israel and Egypt.
Time will tell if Obama has the guts to employ the most powerful military in the world to combat the evil, or if the crisis will deepen to unmanageable proportions.
