Twitter buzzes with brainstorms over ‘The Five’ Beckel’s cryptic apology

The Twitter-verse  is abuzz over Bob Beckel.

The corpulent, combative in-house liberal on Fox News’ “The Five” posted a cryptic apology on Twitter Saturday, acknowledging that some of his bosses at the network were very sore indeed.

Obviously, Beckel left out a pretty big part of his apology tweet: What exactly was he asking forgiveness for? And was he being punished? Beckel’s seat as the show’s liberal foil was filled Friday by Juan Williams, but there was no announcement that Beckel had been benched.

Twitter theories abounded. They ranged from the plausible — Beckel called “Bachelorette” star Andi Dorfman a “slut” because she admitted having sex with one of the contestants on the show but had decided not to marry him.

Beckel was forced to apologize later in the broadcast for that one.

And then there’s the “maybe-if-it-was-MSNBC” theory that holds Beckel is in hot water for glancingly referring to people from China as “Chinamen” in mid-July.

Remember how the smelling-salts crowd at the Huffington Post reacted to that?

(Beckel’s apologized for that, too.)

And then there was his recent admission that he’d “done dope” at the White House — apparently during his stint with the State Department in the Carter administration.

But for a conservative, the best candidate for most-apology-worthy-statement (at least of the summer) was his acknowledgement last week that the Obama administration had covered up the reason behind the deaths of four Americans during the terrorist attack in Benghazi in 2012. And it didn’t help the way he echoed former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in callously dismissing those who lost their lives.

Regardless of the cause, Beckel drew some support even from those philosophically inclined to disagree with him (that would be sane people.) That’s true especially if the alternative were another dyed-in-the-wool lib like Williams.

That might sound like faint praise, but compared to this, it’s a ringing endorsement:

And Beckel’s not even that funny.
