Jon Voight schools Penelope Cruz, Israel critics: ‘Hang your heads in shame’

Actor Jon Voight called actress Penelope Cruz and other lefties to the carpet Saturday for describing Israel’s actions in Gaza as “genocide.”

In a letter published Thursday by a number of European media outlets, Cruz and dozens of other Latino movie stars, directors and writers argued that the Israeli occupation of Gaza triggered a war with the Palestinians, saying Israel “keeps advancing and invading Palestinian territories rather than withdraw to the ’67 borders.”

The letter also urged Spain and the European Union to demand Israel stick by cease-fire agreements, lift the Gaza blockade, open border crossings and help civilians in the area.

Voight, one of the best-known conservative actors in Hollywood, responded to the diatribe in a Hollywood Reporter column, writing that the letter’s authors should “hang their heads in shame” because “you have defamed the only democratic country of goodwill in the Middle East: Israel.”

Recalling the history of Israel’s birth in 1948 and Arab countries’ many attempts to destroy it, Voight wrote about the wars of 1967 and 1973 and the “terrorist campaigns” launched since then.

“And yet Israel has always labored for a peaceful relation with its Arab neighbors,” Voight wrote.  “It voluntarily returned the Sinai Peninsula to Egypt in return for peace, and gave the Palestinians all of Gaza as a peace gesture. What was the response? The Palestinians elected Hamas, a terrorist organization, and they immediately began firing thousands of rockets into Israel.”

He then set his sights directly on the actors and directors who got rich in a county without such dangers.

“You have been able to become famous and have all your monetary gains because you are in a democratic country: America,” Voight wrote. “Do you think you would have been able to accomplish this in Iran, Syria, Lebanon, et cetera? You had a great responsibility to use your celebrity for good.  Instead, you have defamed the only democratic country of goodwill in the Middle East: Israel.”
