Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin was stopped for speeding in her hometown of Wasilla last week, and she responded with a nod to her NASCAR fans.

The lead-footed politician was clocked going 63 mph in a 45 mph zone in a Toyota Tundra pick-up truck, and channeling her inner-Nascar, told TMZ: “I wasn’t speeding, I was qualifying.”

Palin didn’t accept total blame for the offense, jokingly saying rocker Sammy Hagar’s hit song “I Can’t Drive 55” was playing at the time.

The former mayor of Wasilla was fined $154, according to TMZ.
