Russian TV anchor resigns over crash stories: ‘Every single day we’re lying’

A TV anchor quit her influential post on Friday because she was tired of telling lies for a station that slavishly follows the country’s president, attacks his opponents and bends “truth” to political necessity.

Unfortunately, she worked for a Russian television station.

Sara Firth, London-based anchor for the Russian “news” Russia Today outlet, quit publicly Friday, with a broadside that accused the station of lying to cover up Russian role in the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 over eastern Ukraine.

“I couldn’t do it anymore,” she said in an interview with the website Buzzfeed. “Every single day we’re lying and finding sexier ways to do it.”

(That sounds vaguely like a poorly watched American-owned “news” network whose initials start with an M and end with a C — except for the sexy part.)

The UK-born Firth, who’s been with the station since 2009, said Russia Today has been a propaganda vehicle for Russian President Vladimir Putin for years. But she found its callous dishonesty over the suspected shootdown of the commercial plane too much to stomach.

The Putin News Network, for its part, responded with a public statement of its own Friday that accused Firth of planning to leave the network for a different job anyway – implying her criticism might be motivated by something other than devotion to journalism.

“Sara has declared that she chooses the truth; apparently we have different definitions of truth,” the statement said.

Actually, Firth isn’t the first reporter to have a different definition of “truth” from the one Russia Today uses. In March, American anchor Liz Wahl quit the station on the air during a broadcast from Washington, declaring, “I’m proud to be an American and believe in disseminating the truth, and that is why, after this newscast, I’m resigning.”

Spewing state-sponsored propaganda gets tiresome even for Russia Today anchors apparently.

Their American network counterparts should take a lesson.

Some Twitter users thought so, too.

MSNBC comes clean? Now, that would really be news.
