A Wisconsin police chief faces misdemeanor charges over accusations that he registered a tea party leader on gay dating, pornography and federal healthcare websites, according to local TV station WEAU.

If convicted of unlawful use of a computerized communication system, Campbell Police Chief Tim Kelemen could spend up to 90 days in jail and pay fines up to $1,000. But WEAU reported that the chief’s lawyer negotiated a deal to keep him out of jail.

Monroe County District Attorney Kevin Croninger told WEAU that Kelemen was not acting in his official capacity when he signed up La Crosse Tea Party leader Greg Luce on the sites. The two had been involved in an ongoing feud that began in the fall of 2013, according to WEAU.

Keleman believed Luce’s group had distracted motorists by staging protests on area overpasses and persuaded Campbell’s board in October to ban signs, banners and flags on a bridge the group used for its demonstrations, according to the St. Paul Pioneer Press’ online service, TwinCities.com.

Luce felt the ban violated the group’s right to free speech and urged conservatives to call Kelemen’s police department — calls Kelemen said were harassing and threatening.

After Luce started receiving unsolicited calls and emails from gay dating, porn and healthcare websites, he asked officials in the neighboring town of La Crosse to investigate. Police later tracked the activity to Kelemen’s home computer, TwinCities.com reported.

The chief eventually admitted signing Luce up on the sites in retaliation for the calls.

Kelemen’s attorney told WEAU the deal he brokered to keep the chief out of jail calls for Kelemen to continue counseling and perform 40 hours of community service.

Luce has since filed a civil lawsuit against Kelemen, accusing the chief of stealing his identity and violating his right to free speech by encouraging Campbell town officials to pass the overpass ordinance, according to TwinCities.com
