Chick-fil-A sandwiches that helped support field trips special needs students won’t make the cut under Michelle Obama’s school lunch rules.
Students at Socastee High School, outside Myrtle Beach, S.C., will no longer be able to buy the chain’s sandwiches for lunch because they have too many calories and too much sodium, according to Myrtle Beach Online.
Too many calories and too much salt – according to the first lady’s master plan for kids – will mean not enough money for special education kids to get out for special occasions.
“They don’t meet the standards — we’re struggling with it,” Socastee High Principal Paul Browning told the news outlet. “The Chick-fil-A profits went directly to the field trips. We’ve got to raise some money, but we will figure something out.”
Having nutritional needs dictated from Washington in the name of so-called obesity prevention is bad enough. But educators told Myrtle Beach Online controlling calories isn’t even the answer to the problem.
As common sense dictates – a trait remarkably lacking in liberal social schemes wherever they’re tried – the level of activity growing teens engage in matters as much or more than the calories they consume.
Laura Farmer, director of food services for Socastee High’s Horry County School District, told Myrtle Beach Online nothing in the food rules change that.
“One thing that bothers me is that so much of the food is being blamed for obesity, but the kids are not getting their exercise,” Farmer said. “They go hand-in-hand.”
Now, the kids aren’t getting their Chick-fil-A either.
And if those special ed kids don’t get their field trips, their parents can thank Michelle Obama.
