White House won’t renovate bowling alley with ‘green’ materials after blowback

The Obama administration quickly withdrew a politically toxic request for bids Wednesday to refurbish the president’s two bowling lanes with environmentally-friendly materials.

The request was removed hours after it was posted, once it began drawing negative media attention.

The  bowling alleys, brought to the White House during the Truman administration, were moved to the Eisenhower Executive Office Building adjacent to the West Wing in the 1950s, The Washington Times reported.

The cost to renovate the lanes easily could have run into the millions, given the specifics of the request for bids and the requirement that “green” materials be used.

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus summed up the prevailing reaction in this tweet:
