A major donor to President Obama’s re-election campaign was indicted with 15 others, accused of masterminding a bogus multimillion-dollar workers compensation scheme, Pasadena, Calif., public radio station KPCC reported.

The sealed indictment, obtained by Talking Points Memo, said Kareem Ahmed, president and CEO of Landmark Medical Management, developed topical cream formulas “based on the profitability of the ingredients.”

The document accused Ahmed of paying kickbacks to chiropractors and physicians to prescribe the creams, and conspiring with doctors to submit fraudulent workers compensation claims to multiple insurance companies.

The indictment also accused Ahmed, pharmacist Michael Rudolph and Dr. Andrew Jarminski of involuntary manslaughter in the death of a minor identified only as “Albert G.”

As Ahmed’s profits increased, so did his contributions to the Democratic Party and his sightings with candidates and celebrities, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

He gave a million dollar check in 2012 to Priorities USA, a super PAC created to support the president’s re-election bid.  In May of that year, Ahmed was photographed with the first couple at George Clooney’s California home, during a May 2012 fundraiser.

In a 2012 interview with Talking Points Memo, Ahmed called House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi his “personal friend” and bragged of his relationship with governors and senators and his hundreds of thousands of dollars in contributions to Democratic candidates across the country.

According to the campaign data analysis firm Open Secrets, Ahmed donated $100,000 to Majority PAC, created by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s former chief of staff, and $100,000 to House Majority PAC, a group dedicated to defeating Republicans.

When pressed by KPCC for a reaction to the indictment, a Landmark Medical spokesperson said Ahmed was innocent of all charges and would be exonerated
