Paul Ryan rips into IRS commissioner over lost Lois Lerner emails

IRS-RyanU.S. Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., ripped into Internal Revenue Service Commissioner John Koskinen at a House Ways and Means Committee hearing on Friday, telling him “nobody believes you.”

Koskinen was trying to explain how the agency lost two years of emails from Lois Lerner, a central figure in the congressional investigation into the IRS targeting tea party groups for additional scrutiny.

“I’m sitting here, listening to this testimony, I don’t believe it,” an incredulous Ryan said. “That’s your problem. Nobody believes you.”

Ryan presented a timeline of claims made by the IRS since the scandal first broke, saying “all of those things have been proven untrue.”

“This is a pattern of abuse, a pattern of behavior that is not giving us any confidence that this agency is being impartial,” he added. “I don’t believe you. This is incredible.”

Koskinen tried to respond to Ryan’s charges, but the lawmaker would not yield, prompting U.S. Rep. Sander Levin, D-Mich., to tell him to let the commissioner answer the question.

“I didn’t ask him a question!” Ryan fired back.
