‘You are sick’: Columnist compares Marine imprisoned in Mexico to mass killer in the making

A particularly obnoxious piece and Twitter post Sunday by a Los Angeles Times columnist had Twitter users outraged at the suggestion that an American Marine imprisoned in Mexico was a mass shooting waiting to happen.

National affairs columnist Robin Abcarian wrote that Marine reserve Sgt. Andrew Tahmooressi, who crossed the border accidentally April 1 carrying three firearms that are legal in the United States but illegal in Mexico presented enough of a danger to our neighbors to the south that he should have been locked up on weapons charges.

That’s fair enough, maybe. But Abcarian drew heavy fire when she went further, comparing Tahmooressi to the deranged killer who slaughtered six people with a knife and guns in a rampage in the University of California, Santa Barbara, town of Isla Vista.

In a tweet promoting her column, Abcarian posted

Reaction was overwhelmingly angry. (Warning: Some strong language ahead.)

Some focused on defending the military.

Some focused on the politics of the Obama administration.

And some focused on Abcarian’s style.

Suffice it to say, “angry” doesn’t quite cover it.

Sgt. Tahmooressi has a groundswell of support during his trial in Mexico, and it’s not just from conservatives (unless you consider congresswoman Rep. Debbie Wasserman Shultz a conservative.)

Pundits like Abcarian, and of course the chief liberal in the White House, would do themselves and the rest of us a favor if they actually listened for a change — and lay off the cheap shots.
