Lax enforcement of United States immigration laws by the Obama administration has resulted in a flood of youngsters pouring into the country, and stretching resources to the breaking point.
On Friday, Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin was unexpectedly notified by the Department of Homeland Security that she should prepare Fort Sill in Lawton to receive up to 1,200 minors for an unspecified period of time, as soon as Tuesday, The Oklahoman reported.
Fallin, said she was “blindsided” and immediately reacted. “The Obama administration continues to fail in its duty to protect our borders and continues to promote policies that encourage, rather than discourage, illegal immigration.”
Over the past few days, the White House notified Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, a U.S. Naval base in Ventura County, Calif., and a makeshift detention center in Nogales, Ariz., to make room for housing hundreds of unaccompanied juveniles, primarily from Central America.
“Word has gotten out around the world about President Obama’s lax immigration enforcement policies,” said Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., a key player in the Capitol Hill immigration reform debate, “and it has encouraged more individuals to come to the United States illegally.”
What began in 2011 of approximately 6,000 youngsters leaving home and crossing into the U.S. is expected to reach 80,000 this year and possibly 125,000 in 2015, according to a Department of Health and Human Services internal memo cited by the New York Times.
Obama has described the flood of young illegals as “a humanitarian crisis” and scrambled to find them food, shelter, and legal counsel, while critics have laid the blame at his doorstep for failing to secure our borders and for pandering to Latino voters for future elections.
Rep. James Lankford, R-Oklahoma City, said the surge of minors “is a direct result of President Obama’s policies of encouraging amnesty and failing to enforce existing immigration laws.”
And Sen. James Inhofe, R-Okla., ranking member of the Armed Services Committee decried this improper use of Ft. Sill, an artillery training facility. “At a time when the president is drastically reducing defense spending funds at a historically rapid rate,” he said, “he now expects our military bases to temporarily take on the responsibility for taking care of unaccompanied children who have illegally the border into the United States.”
As the influx and expenditures skyrocket, expect more summer heat to emanate from Washington.
