The mystery over U.S. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl’s condition and recovery took an unexpected turn Friday, when Fox News’ Charles Krauthammer accused the White House of possible witness tampering.
Krauthammer’s comments came after a bizarre press conference at the Idaho State National Guard’s headquarters, where the released prisoner’s father, Bob Bergdahl, spoke to media cameras to address his son directly, telling him his medical team in Germany “was handpicked.”
“Listen to them,” the elder Bergdahl said. “We sent them. These are handpicked people. We’re on a first-name basis with these people. They are true, they know what they’re doing, they’re here to help you, and they have our great gratitude.”
Bergdahl said he knew his son would see the message. The soldier has not yet called his family since gaining freedom a week ago.
Krauthammer on Thursday questioned the U.S. Army’s refusal to release basic information at the U.S. hospital in Germany.
The American public has received less information “from our own government than from the Taliban,” he said on Fox News’ “Special Report.” “If this goes on any longer, I think we’re going to imagine that perhaps there might be some witness tampering happening.”
At some point, he added, Bergdahl will have to explain his behavior. When asked by Fox News host Greta van Susteren to elaborate, Krauthammer said the Obama administration had a stake in the Bergdahl “served with honor and distinction” narrative.
The mystery over Bergdahl’s health has been questioned by Senate Intelligence Committee Chairwoman Diane Feinstein, with many wondering if his controversial release was nothing more than a pretext to begin emptying the Guantanamo Bay facility.
