Michelle Obama’s twin failures are coming home to roost.
With the school lunch program about as popular as broccoli for dessert, the first lady is poking her nose into the congressional process as Republicans try to roll back the 2010 nutrition guidelines that are filling up trash cans across the country with wasted food.
At the same time, she’s ignoring the VA scandal that’s hurting the very families she and second lady Jill Biden have spent years pretending to care about.
Under an agriculture bill working its way through the Republican House, schools would be able to drop the first lady’s nutrition standards if they suffer “a net loss” on food programs over a six-month period, according to the Associated Press.
The bill’s sponsor, Rep. Robert Aderholt, R-Ala., said school districts around the country are complaining that students are either passing up lunches entirely or throwing the food away uneaten – especially the fruits and vegetables Mrs. Obama seems to think she can order kids to start liking the way her husband orders their parents to switch doctors.
The first lady convened a group of nutritionists to meet at the White House on Tuesday to come up with a way to keep pretending the food flop is working. After it, she denounced Aderholt’s plan as “unacceptable,” according to The Hill. (“Unacceptable” is what the Obamas always say when they’re stomping their feet.)
The School Nutrition Association – which knows first-hand the 2010 guidelines aren’t working — wants to get off the first lady’s diet.
They call it “flexibility,” but that’s only to avoid offending the easily offended one. They want out because the country’s students want out.
“SNA celebrates every success, but the Administration’s own data proves that student participation in school lunch is abruptly down in 48 states despite rising school enrollment and 30 years of steady program growth,” group President Leah Schmidt said in a news release.
“Our request for flexibility … comes from thousands of school cafeteria professionals who have shown how these overly prescriptive regulations are hindering their effort to get students to eat healthy school meals.”
In other words, butt out, Mrs. Obama.
Meanwhile, as the VA scandal embroils her husband’s administration, critics are starting to note that veterans’ care and the welfare of their families was supposed to be another cause dear to the first lady’s heart.
In a scathing column on American Thinker, “FLOTUS ‘Joins Forces with dead veterans,” Jeannie DeAngelis outlines the numerous easy-publicity talk-show appearances the first lady has made over the years pretending to give a tinker’s damn about veterans’ health, speaking moving but meaningless words about what the country owes the men and women who protect the rest of us.
One would think that after all the effort she’s invested, at some point the FLOTUS would have caught wind that military veterans were languishing for months on waiting lists at VA hospitals without proper care, DeAngelis writes.
But she didn’t.
As DeAngelis makes clear, Mesdames Obama and Biden have pretended to be concerned about military families through their sham “Join Forces” initiative, which might have generated flattering headlines and glowing television clips, but did nothing to prevent veterans from dying for lack of care – and being lied to and lied about in the process.
The twin failures of Michelle Obama: One of an overly intrusive government trying wastefully to dictate individual behavior; the other of a cruelly indifferent government pretending to care about individuals but offering instead empty promises — and eventually death.
Is there a better example of liberalism at work?
