Hostile city clerk resigns, leaving lasting impression on her way out

An elected city clerk in suburban San Francisco under pressure to resign and facing a recall petition for reportedly failing to perform even the job’s most basic duties made the evening news and the local paper this week with a flaming resignation letter that insulted her job, her fellow officials and her constituents.

kimlehmkuhl0521mugBridges burned, she’s reportedly going to work for a union now in the nation’s capital.

According to numerous media outlets, 34-year-old Kim Lehmkuhl was elected city clerk of Pleasant Hill, just north of San Francisco, in 2012, but has shown little interest in actually performing the duties of the job, including taking taking minutes of City Council meetings. Instead, according to a petition to recall her, Lehmkuhl spent her time at the public meetings sending live Twitter posts “to express political views and make editorial comments.”

The Twitter account she used as city clerk as been taken down, according to the local CBS affiliate, and the petition doesn’t describe those “political views,” but Lehmkuhl’s personal Twitter feed might provide a clue. It includes criticism of Israel in its struggle with the Palestinians and a draft proposal for diversity and non-violent tactics for the group Occupy Oakland, which was among the most violent of the various Occupy branches that arose in late 2011 and spring 2012.

In short, she’s a flaming lib – and her resignation letter was equally inflammatory.

“This has been an atrocious, incredibly depressing and mind-numbingly inane experience I would not wish on anyone. I wish the city the best of luck in finding some schmuck eager to transcribe every last misogynistic joke, self-indulgent anecdote and pathetic pandering attempt by council, and every tinfoil hat conspiracy theory, racist aside, and NIMBY asshattery from the lovely council meeting frequent flyers, without which, surely our democracy could not flourish.”

To say Pleasant Hill was glad to see this particular official leave would be an understatement.

“I’m paraphrasing our former President Gerald Ford in saying ‘Our long municipal nightmare is now over,’” Pleasant Hill Mayor Tim Flaherty said in announcing the resignation, according to the Contra Costa Times. “Our city clerk has resigned.”

Contempt for democracy, a disrespect for the processes of government and a failure to perform even the most basic duties of office that led to a serious recall effort?

Sounds like that AFL/CIO job at WorkingAmerica in D.C. will be a perfect fit.

If not, the White House might be hiring.
