The Democrats were the real losers in North Carolina Tuesday.
The Republican establishment candidate, Speaker Thom Tillis, won the GOP nomination for U.S. Senate by a big enough margin to avoid a runoff that would have used precious resources on fighting within the party instead of fighting the popular Democratic nominee Sen. Kay Hagan.
The Hill reported:
The Associated Press called the race outright for Tillis, who was leading with 46 percent of the vote in the crowded field with 43 percent of precincts reporting. Tea Party favorite Greg Brannon (R) had 27 percent and Rev. Mark Harris (R) had 17 percent, with five other candidates in the single digits.
Tillis’s win comes following a huge effort by establishment Republicans to boost Tillis over his primary foes in the crowded race. North Carolina is a top priority for the GOP in their effort to take back the Senate, and Tillis’s win marks their first major victory of 2014 over the Tea Party to begin primary season.
