First lady shamelessly appears on NBC sitcom; ratings as bad as president’s

First lady Michelle Obama made a cameo appearance on the NBC sitcom “Parks and Recreation” Thursday, and it seems no one cared .

She appeared in the season’s finale to give a pep talk to Leslie Knope, played by Amy Poehler, who’s considering a position with the National Park Service on Chicago, according to The Hill.

“We need passionate people like you on our national parks,” Obama, playing herself said, prompting animated nodding from Knope.

“Are you nodding because you agree with me?” the first lady asked.

“Yes, I do agree with you,” gushed the actor. “I agree with you on all things throughout history until the end of times forever.”

An Obama appearance wouldn’t be complete without a plug of some kind. The only question is, which will it be? Obamacare? Immigration reform? Gun control? Viewers didn’t have to wait long to find out.

“You and Grant worked together?” Knope asked

“Yeah, we worked together a lot,” the first lady replied. “He helped me integrate the ‘let’s Move’ program into our national parks.”

The scene concluded with the two talking about Chicago, the first lady’s home town, followed by a high five.

Although the character Leslie Knope may have been awestruck by Obama’s appearance, it looks like the TV viewing public has had enough.

The overnight ratings for Thursday’s Metered Markets, according to TV Media Insights, tells the story:

-Winners:
“The Big Bang Theory” (CBS), “Grey’s Anatomy” (ABC)

-Respectable Sampling:
“Bad Teacher” (CBS), “Black Box” (ABC)

-Losers (excluding repeats):
“Parks and Recreation” (NBC), “Saturday Night Live: SNL Shorts” (NBC), “Surviving Jack” (Fox)

In season-finale news, a one-hour installment of NBC’s “Parks and Recreation,” featuring a cameo appearance by First Lady Michelle Obama, scored a 2.1/ 3 from 8-9 p.m., which was actually up by 24 percent from the abysmal 1.7/ 3 at 8:30 p.m. one week earlier. But a 2.1 in the household overnights is certainly nothing to crow about, and these ratings will be no better next season no matter where “P&R” airs.
