Dana Perino gives a kick to GOP’s George H.W. Bush socks giveaway

A GOP fundraising gimmick featuring George Bush the elder and his “guilty pleasure” of a good pair of socks didn’t get the warmest welcome  in the Twitter world this week.

But in politics, as in life, almost everything goes better with a pretty blonde. (In this case, “The Five’s” Dana Perino.)

The campaign kicked off with an email blast Monday morning from the former president, confessing his love of a good pair of socks and advertising a specially commissioned pair available on a limited basis for a donation to the Republican Party of $35 or more.

The email was followed up by a Twitter posting from GOP National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus.

And that’s where the grumbling started. Really, when you’re in the trenches of a culture war, patrician’s footwear isn’t the top of your list of things to worry about.

And shouldn’t an ex-president who also spent time as director of the CIA have more interesting “guilty pleasures” than a pair of socks?

But you don’t get to become chairman of a major political party by being stupid. Preibus pulled out the heavy artillery, with an RNC tweet of “The Five” host Dana Perino — press secretary in the younger Bush White House — showing off the fancy footwear.

She also showed a little leg — just not her own.

As expected, the endorsement drew in some fans.

Not everyone’s going to be happy, of course. This is the Republican Party, and it doesn’t get more establishment that George Herbert Walker Bush and his knitted socks.

Wanna bet Dana could change his mind?
