Fed up with U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder’s arrogance, a Republican congressman sponsored a bill to hit him where it hurts — in the wallet.
The measure, introduced Thursday by U.S. Rep. Blake Farenthold, R-Texas, would withhold salary payments to federal officials who are in contempt of Congress.
“The American people should not be footing the bill for federal employees who stonewall Congress or rewarding government officials’ bad behavior,” Farenthold said in unveiling the bill, according to The Hill. “If the average American failed to do his or her job, he or she would hardly be rewarded.”
Holder, who was held in contempt of Congress in 2012 for failing to produce documents in the Fast and Furious gun-running case, has exacerbated his relationship with congressional leaders by hindering progress on numerous other investigations.
Last week, the House Oversight Committee voted to hold former IRS official Lois Lerner in contempt for refusing to testify.
Farenthold’s measure states that once the House or Senate passes a resolution holding an official in contempt, his or her pay would be suspended until the contempt charges are revoked.
