When Greg Gutfeld and his fellow hosts on “The Five” broke down Friday’s “Wheel of Fortune” fail – when a college student blew a chance at $1 million by failing to pronounce “Achilles” correctly – they probably weren’t intending to spark a Twitter war to rival the siege of Troy.
But they did.
If you didn’t know someone could get to college without knowing how to pronounce the name of one of the most famous figures in the Western literary canon (not to mention a fairly common metaphor for fatal weakness), check out the video from the episode here. (If you haven’t seen it, you’ll cringe.)
Gutfeld was the most scathing of the critics of the show, calling host Pat Sajak the leader of a “cultish” and “evil” and noting – by way of backing it up – that the letters on the long-running show are actually made from the skin of harp seals.
(He could also have mentioned that Sajak and co-host Vanna White don’t seem to have aged a day in the past three decades on the show, a la Dorian Gray) but that’s a story for another day.
Check out “The Five” here.
Twitter fans of both men weren’t shy about egging them on. Here are a few examples, via Twitchy.
@patsajak Mr. @greggutfeld just called you evil and your wheel cultish on The Five. Comment please. hahaha

@patsajak@greggutfeld Impending Twitter war in 3…2…1
— D. McDaniel (@DManiac777) April 14, 2014
The combatants didn’t disappoint — with Sajak throwing the first punch.
@greggutfeld I hear you called me “evil” again. Don’t think I’m not reporting you at my next Satanic cult meeting.
— Pat Sajak (@patsajak) April 14, 2014
And Gutfeld wasn’t giving in.
@patsajak We all know what you use the wheel for, at night, when everyone goes home. You are truly a sick, sick man.
— GregGutfeld (@greggutfeld) April 14, 2014
Sajak shot back and the battle was joined — in a 10-grade kind of way that made those college students from Friday night look like geezers.
@greggutfeld By the way, Beelzebub asked if he could borrow your Twitter profile pic.
— Pat Sajak (@patsajak) April 14, 2014
@patsajak Can’t say I blame him. It’s a “hot” picture.
— GregGutfeld (@greggutfeld) April 14, 2014
@greggutfeld Yes, it is, if by “hot” you mean creepy.
— Pat Sajak (@patsajak) April 14, 2014
@patsajak i’m used to my good looks being the target of insecure derision. Perhaps that is your “achillys” heel. #evil
— GregGutfeld (@greggutfeld) April 14, 2014
Sajak would have kicked him off the show for that “achillys” business — but he took the high road of maturity instead.
@greggutfeld Why don’t you go stand in the corner…next to the curio cabinet.
— Pat Sajak (@patsajak) April 14, 2014
Lincoln-Douglass it wasn’t, of course, but it’s always entertaining when these two Twitter talkers take each other on.
If it were Dana and Vanna, you could sell tickets.
