The chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee said Sunday he believes that Republicans are motivated by racism — just not all of them.
On CNN’s “State of the Union,” host Candy Crowley prompted the discussion by asking U.S. Rep. Steve Israel, D-N.Y., about “off script” comments made by Attorney General Eric Holder at an event last week. Holder ranted about how poorly he felt he and President Obama have been treated by Congress and implied that race was a contributing factor.
Crowley played a clip of U.S. Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., calling Republicans racists for “not bringing up an immigration bill.” The former speaker also revisited her stash of secret quotes from invisible anonymous friends across the aisle. She allegedly “heard them say to the Irish, ‘if it were just you, this would be easy.'”
Crowley asked Israel, “Do you think your Republican colleagues are racist?”
“Not all of them, no. Of course not,” he answered. “But to a significant extent, the Republican base does have elements that are animated by racism.”
To be give credit to Crowley, she didn’t actually sound like she was buying the bull.
