The Atlanta Braves can only hope Wednesday night’s colossal blunder is not an omen for the season.
During the team’s home opener, as fans celebrated former player Hank Aaron, fireworks set ablaze the American flag that stands guard over Turner Field.
Julie Paulk, who was at the game, posted the following video on her Youtube account, which includes a photo she took that is now going viral:
“It happened because of new pyrotechnics,” a Braves spokesperson told USA Today Sports. “For the first time, they put pyrotechnics on Braves Vision. One of the pyrotechnics flew at the flag and lit it on fire.”
The team did note that the flag was made out of flame retardant material and didn’t actually catch fire, but did have holes burnt in it.
Ironically, Aaron was in the news this week for comparing GOP lawmakers who oppose President Obama to the KKK. Some are sure to point to the symbolism of the American flag catching fire at his former team’s home opener the very next day after he unfairly attacked fellow citizens for being racist.
Paulk’s photo of the burning flag was captured in this tweet:
