Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush’s statement Sunday that illegal immigration was “an act of love” has created division among the young Turks within the Republican Party, most notably between U.S. Sens. Ted Cruz from Texas, and Marco Rubio from Florida.
Appearing on CNN’s “The Lead with Jake Tapper” Monday, Cruz said that although he was “a big fan of Jeb Bush,” it’s not “positive and beneficial” to break the law in order to seek a better life in the United States.
“In my view, we need to be a nation that welcomes and celebrates legal immigrants,” Cruz said. “People who follow the rules and come here according to the law. We’re a nation of immigrants, we need to celebrate that. But at the same time, rule of law matters. And if you look at any sovereign nation, securing your border is critically important.”
He did see the need for immigration reform, however.
“This is not a humane system and we need to solve the problems, Cruz continued. “Secure the borders, and then improve and streamline legal immigration so people can come to America consistent with the rule of law.”
Rubio, however, seemed to side with Bush’s statement in a 2012 interview, according to the Tampa Bay Times.
“If my kids went to sleep hungry every night and my country didn’t give me an opportunity to feed them, there isn’t a law, no matter how restrictive, that would prevent me from coming here.”
Rubio has often been criticized for his stance on immigration and his role in the bipartisan “Gang of Eight” that hammered out a comprehensive immigration reform package.
Both Cruz and Rubio are the sons of Cuban immigrants.
