Maybe that booze they’re buying at the State Department is starting to show.
Secretary of State John Kerry’s department is spending almost a half-million dollars to install the statue of a colorless camel at the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad, according to BuzzFeed.

Then $400,000 work, by American artist John Baldessari, also includes a giant, camel-sized needle, according to BuzzFeed. It’s called “Camel Contemplating Needle.”
According to four pages of State Department documentation for the purchase, the $400,000 price tag includes only the piece itself, so there’s no estimation of how much it will cost to install it – presumably getting it to Pakistan from Baldessari’s California base.
(There’s also no estimate of how much of the statue will be worth after a rampaging mob storms the embassy in some Islamist fit of rage over the next YouTube video nobody’s seen. Americans can only pray the ambassador will still be around afterwards to explain it.)

But there is an irony here. The State Department – home of the $1.3 million booze tab — is spending nearly a half-million taxpayer dollars to impress strangers with a statue based on a biblical injunction to beware the danger wealth can pose to the immortal soul.
The richest country on earth, paving a road with good intentions.
